Coach Mo's Discipleship Model

by AG

During our trip with AIA Basketball this summer, I was given the opportunity to learn from our tour director, Coach Mo, in his environment.   Coach has been walking with God, and pouring his life into others much longer than I have been alive.   He's full of so many amazing nuggets that allowed him to share such godly truth into the lives of the men we brought on tour with us.

One of the key things I learned from Coach Mo was a model of discipleship that I feel is so well balanced for people seeking to walk with God.   Balance in today's fast-paced society can be so crazy at times, and if we are not careful, it's easy to pour ourselves out to the point where we become tired and empty - leaving us at times, vulnerable.

The model is simple:

      • We have a disciple that we are pouring into
      • We have a mentor/discipler that is pouring into us
      • And a sojourner/friend that is walking day to day beside us.

I think if we have all three of the people in place, we will see a more biblical discipleship process take place.   Think about it.   The original disciples were being discipled by Jesus, walked beside one another, and were sent to make disciples themselves.  They were never alone in the mission they had before them.

This model looks different for everyone, but it still works today. Marriage as a discipleship provides a "built-in" sojourner by our side at all times.   And within the house church environment, we have many chances to have relationships with disciplers/disciples.

Learning to live this model is a goal of mine, as I am not sure I think some of my circles are being occupied at all times.   That is a goal for 2009 for myself to really define what & who is in this model for me, knowing that some circles will be filled by more than a single individual.

I think this model is nice, but what happens when a person is the most mature believer or the model looks more like many sojourners and disciples?

I see this being a very real problem where the elder Godly disciplers are lacking. Where are the older men of God? They do exist, but they are few. Do you ever reach the point, say when you are an elder, when you just have sojourners and are not being actively discipled by another human being?

Just some thoughts.

Joel, those are some great thoughts.

My thoughts are that any one of the branches could have multiple people at the end of it.  We might multiple mentors, or multiple disciples.  But yes, a person could potentially reach a point where finding a mentor would be difficult.  But I think even the godliest elder however still would need a sojourner walking beside them (accountability, etc).

great thoughts on both.  i think this defnitely is an ideal model however its a tough model.  Joel is right...  its easy to find people to disciple, they fall in our lap everyday, God brings them to us.  the older men to disciple us are very rare and lets be honest none of them are chomping at the bit to be a part of anyone's life.  rather, my disciplers are AG, Joel, Troy, Brooklyn, Neil, etc.  i guess we don't have to look for older believers, just wise ones that want to be a part of your life.

Good thoughts. I think accountability remains a staple to any solid growth in a persons life, regardless of whether that is from a mature believer/mentor or a good friend who struggles through life along side another.

Josh's point raises the question of where are the older men that are chomping at the bit to disciple the younger ones? And do the older men ask this same question to those that are older than they? In either case, the world is short of strong men of God who love to convey the knowledge, wisdom, discernment, integrity and character to those who are younger.
